Post-draft reflections

  • How would you all feel about playing more rounds in future tournaments? Facing off against a mere three opponents, particularly in a huge eight-player tournament like the one we just had, feels a bit silly. Particularly when individual decks can perform so dramatically differently against different ones (or when they, e.g., get mana-screwed once and it loses the match). And, plus, you just don't get to interact with the majority of the players. It would also add a lot of drama and interest to it if the people who were getting ahead, for example, were guaranteed to all play one another (I never played Stu and therefore didn't get to vie for second place with him, for example). And with more rounds there would be less need to do funny tiebreaking calculations, which I still find to be a disquietingly... a priori way of determining as weighty an issue as Tournaverse rulership.
  • On that note, we should clearly sort out how rulership is being determined, if that's not already sorted.
  • Is everyone on board for sealed with 2x(Shards, Conflux, Reborn) in two weeks' time? I'm very much in favour of getting out of M10 by now. Part of the reason I dumped all my soldiers on Christos was because I couldn't stand those being my only standby creatures in white -- and my other two decent colours, black and blue, are both rather mana-demanding. Most of the good cards want to be monocolour cards. So it should change things a lot to get all this crazy multicoloured shit, and it may make all our decks much more interesting. (On top of giving us the mana-fixing we'd need to ACTUALLY get a multi-coloured M10 deck off the ground.)
  • I think everyone found making the spreadsheet keep up with our trades more or less impossible. I'm not sure what a good solution to that is, as recounting every card would be a bit odious, and it'll get considerably more complicated when new sets arrive. Suggestions?
  • If anyone wants to do some constructed test-play in the next couple weeks, I'd be up for it. Although that means I have to actually make a deck.

  1. While you old sleepyheads have been snoozing, I have been putting together a rather greedy and probably ineffective deck. So, y'know, I'll be up for some constructed games pretty much whenever.

  2. I have a deck together, too!

Also: I'm up for more rounds, but only if we get started earlier than 4pm on game day. Deck construction + 4 rounds + food in there somewhere = ~6 hours.

  3. Actually, Gavin, we were basically done our tournament yesterday in about 4.5 hours; the rest of the time was rare-drafting and trading.

But yes, fundamentally I agree: More rounds would be great as long as it doesn't mean we're playing for two days straight.

  4. I haven't finished constructing but I will have something soon. More round are very doable, but I agree aiming for earlier is always better. In this case Scuba got in the way for the early start Saturday while a wedding blocked Friday. I think we will have to weigh that on an ongoing basis but I think as long as we are all aware of the desire to play early we should be good.

  5. I agree with Stu, I think that it is certainly possible to do more rounds than what was done, and though there are always going to be complications it may be important to sort out food concerns previous to the actual 15min that you are hungry.

    Draft hoewever..., lost of fun

I suggested this in another post as well... I think that the draft should be worth 2 points where every other tourny is worth one. The reason that I say this is because it would be better to give people a HIGHER motivation to draft the best deck possible than best deck with the most benefit in the long run. The difference may sound minor, but I believe that it is not.

  6. Yeah, we're gonna have to work on thinking ahead regarding food...

That does seem like a decent way to increase the incentive to draft sportingly, but I wouldn't want it to make Tournaverse rulership too arbitrary or too easily swayed. Drafts can be a little haphazard in terms of who ends up with the best deck. Do we still feel like people aren't motivated enough to draft the best deck possible? I felt some pain as I let good black cards go by, but was able to make myself stay in the colours that made most sense for the draft, personally.
